Every spring countless butterflies hatch along the rivers and streams that meander through New York's Catskill Mountains. Among the most majestic are the Yellow Swallowtails that are a common sight along the Beaverkill River where they gather in spectacular clusters. Sadly, many of these carefree and graceful flyers are also swept to their untimely deaths by motor vehicles on nearby thoroughfares. For some indecipherable reason I find it impossible to pass all of these beautiful lifeless forms and stop often to collect one or two. Several of them are now preserved in the form of soft ground etchings I made directly from the butterflies. At once, they remind me of their stunning natural beauty, how fragile life is, and the importance of honoring both.

Each of the four images included in the suite is from a soft ground impression etched in a copper plate with additional aquatint or marbling. The images are printed in either one color or a two-color viscosity technique. The numbered and signed edition is limited to just four. Each of these is presented in a deluxe custom-made clam shell box covered in aqua-green raw silk. In the cover of each box is embedded one of the original copper plates from the suite. The plates have been given a beautiful patina, polished and lacquered by the artist.

The entire edition was printed on a custom hand-made paper created by Dieu Donne Papermill of New York City. Each sheet of paper, deckled on all four sides, bears both the paper mills' distinctive watermark and the artist's stamp. The images are 6" x 6" on paper sheets measuring approximately 12" x 12". The boxed sets also include the artist's statement.
